Before the season aired JP said (about the triangle) that we will see how their feelings for each others changes as they care about each other more deeply. Maybe it means Stefan will be allowed to very slowly drift away from the triangle and move on while still loving and caring about DE. I just read some opinions that TVD ratings dropped because of DE...
Really SE, fans?No fan would give up a good show becasue of one pairing of another, and most of fanbase are us! It's natural for ratings to drop after some time of broadcasting, plus the writing (constancy, plotlines, clear goal of story arcs) are getting worse wince the half of S3, but to blame it on DE?
